Gloomy Wednesday: Ella’s Turn

Things went badly the last time Professor Helena Slogar implanted a brain in Grogar the teddy bear, her beloved daughter Melissa’s husband-to-be. But Professor Slogar has had some time to ponder her problems, and she believes she has the answer. She needs to be more discerning about the brain she uses. Perhaps a brain that’s fresher. Certainly she needs one that is not diseased. But how to find such a perfect specimen?

She’ll have to choose the brain while it’s still in its future donor. In fact, if she could interact with the potential donor in a social situation to assess the health of the specimen and the quality of the brain that would be ideal. And then, there are certain diseases that would speed the availability of the brain without compromising its viability . . . yes, yes. There have been rumors in the neighborhood that several of the Blackwater children are rather sickly. Such a shame. Perhaps an evening’s entertainment would be welcome. A small party.

Alas, the evening at Castle Slogar was more successful for some of the attendees than others. Professor Slogar met and spoke to several interesting candidates. Some of them were regrettably healthy, but . . . accidents do happen. She does not despair. Angel Blackwater proved to be a grave disappointment. She certainly seemed to enjoy herself. Rather too much. She was so diverted by drink that she forgot her ailment entirely and ending the evening dancing on tabletops. No, Angel was not at all a candidate, despite her fortuitous state of health. Professor Slogar cannot risk darling Melissa’s future husband having Unfortunate Tendencies.

And then, poor Lord Slogar. He did so enjoy a party in his previous life and Professor Slogar was certain he was looking forward to this one. But many of the guests seemed altogether put off by the appearance of a brain-in-a-box at the dinner table. Lord Slogar was completely shunned by society. Ah, well, the locals are hopelessly provincial. Perhaps they will have better luck with their acquaintances in the city.

So right now the scores stand like this:

Ella’s Cards

Lord Slogar                            -45

Professor Helena Slogar       0

Melissa Slogar                            0

Grogar                                        -30

Elias E. Gorr                             -30

RB’s Cards

The Old Dam                   0

Angel                               -20

Cousin Mordecai       -20

Willem Stark                   0

Balthazar                          0

I added a good modifier worth +10 points to Angel, so her score went up from -30 to -20.  I added a bad modifier card to Lord Slogar, dropping his score to -45. This means I’m still winning!

Gloomy Writing Prompt: Yes, you’re supposed to torture your characters, to make them suffer and change, but everyone needs a break every now and then. Write a scene in which your character is diverted by drink. Then add a link to your post in the comments.  You can always give them a nasty hangover in the morning to get the torturing back on track!

    • Ella: She’s got something great for next week. 🙂 Now I’ve just got to come up with something good for the week after that!
